Recycling has been mandatory in Columbia County since 11/1/89

Accepted Materials

No charge for recycling the following items:

Acceptable Comingled Recyclable Materials include the following:

  • Newspapers, magazines & catalogues
  • Telephone and soft cover books
  • Junk mail and envelopes
  • Paper of all colors
  • Paperboard such as cereal and shoe boxes
  • Cardboard and brown paper bags
  • Milk & juice cartons
  • Plastic bottles marked #1-#7
  • Glass bottles and jars of all colors
  • Aluminum, such as pie plates, trays and foils
  • Metal cans made of aluminum, steel or tin
** All containers must be rinsed thoroughly

The following are UNACCEPTABLE Recyclable Materials:

Plastic bags, unmarked plastic, windows, light bulbs, dishes, ceramics, foam packaging of any kind, aerosol cans (paint, hairspray, cleaners) and recyclables containing food waste or residue.


Residential grass clippings, leaves and tree trimmings are acceptable at the Greenport Transfer Station ONLY. Materials may be no longer than 4' length and 4" in diameter. There is a charge of $25/ton and a minimum charge of $2.00.
