Appliances& Freon

The Environmental Protection Agency regulates the disposal of appliances that contain freon. Section 608 of the Clean Air Act states that freon must be removed from an appliance prior to the disposal of the appliance.

Columbia County is working in coordination with certified dealers to insure that this practice is met. If you choose to have a participating dealer remove the appliance, a fluorescent pink sticker will be attached to the appliance as proof of the freon being removed properly. Provided this sticker is attached, the resident will simply be charged a flat disposal fee when disposing of the appliance at the Greenport Transfer Station.

Residents may choose to dispose of the appliance with the freon still in the unit and a separate charge has been established to cover both the fee to remove the freon and the disposal costs.

These items may be taken to the GREENPORT TRANSFER STATION ONLY. Residents must complete the required EPA paperwork and should ask the assistance of our station attendant prior to the disposal of the appliance.
