Adult Supervision

Supervision of offenders consists of monitoring the activities of a probationer by collateral contacts with employers, family members, police, etc.; performing random drug and alcohol testing; observation of the probationer in the community and making referrals for counseling and treatment.

The emphasis is to insure that the probationer is complying with court ordered probation conditions.  By providing effective supervision, it is the desired result that the probationer will improve his or her conduct and thus reduce the chances of recidivism.  Beginning in 2007, probation began using a validated risk and needs assessment database and analysis system called COMPAS (Correctional Offender Management and Profiling Alternative Sanctions).  COMPAS is a flexible tool that assesses four different risk factors and eighteen criminogenic needs scales and will assist in supervision and case management decisions.

The primary objectives of supervision are to:

    • Provide community protection

    • Prepare the probationer for independent, law-abiding behavior, i.e. providing referrals to treatment programs and community services

    • Update the sentencing courts regarding probationer compliance

    • Collect and submit restitution/reparation to victims of unlawful acts

    • File violation complaints and appear in court if it is alleged that a probationer has violated conditions of probation

    • Collect and submit DNA to the State DNA Databank in accordance with NYS Law

    • Perform sex offender address verifications in support of the Sex Offender Registration Act
