Columbia County Department of Health Public Health Priorities

Promote Wellness > Prevent/Reduce Childhood & Adult Obesity, Diabetes, High Blood Pressure and Heart Disease through: Regular medical check ups, Healthy Diet, Regular (daily) Physical Activity, Reduce Stress, No Tobacco Use.

Prevent/Reduce ETOH related harm, injury and deaths due to motor vehicle accidents or other activity involving alcohol risk.

Suicide Prevention through Community Awareness Campaign, Prevention Hot Line

Prevent/Reduce Domestic Violence and other forms of Abuse in collaboration with other community partners.

Adolescent and Adult Immunization for Hepatitis, HPV, Tdap, Meningococcal Disease, shingles, Flu & Pneumonia.

Prevent/Reduce Tobacco Use and Exposure to Second Hand Smoke

Reduce Lyme disease through continued public awareness and increased early diagnosis by practioners.

Increase the number of children who receive regular dental care services such as screening, cleaning and the application of sealant through dental care education and increased access.

Increase Public Health awareness regarding rabies and reduce the number of persons who place themselves at risk for exposure, through rabies prevention information and immunization services.

Continue to promote guidelines for the healthy development of children including prenatal care, well child visits, and timely immunization.

The above outlined public health priorities have been identified from the most recent Community Health Assessment (CHA), CCDOH annual data, and programmatic experience. The CHA is an ongoing process of regular and systematic collection, assembly, analysis, and distribution of information on the health needs of the community.

This information includes statistics on health status, community health needs/gaps/problems and assets. The sharing of findings with key stakeholders enables and mobilizes community members to work collaboratively towards building a healthier community.
