**NEW**

The Radon Education Program at the Columbia County Health Department assists income eligible, elderly and minority residents who own their own homes and would like help in determining radon levels and guidance in mitigating unsafe levels of radon in their homes.

We also offer general information to educate the community at large on the effects of radon on health.

Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the US – and most radon can easily be mitigated at minimal cost. The challenge to all of us is informing the public. The Columbia County Radon Coalition consists of area home inspectors, insurance and representatives from the Office for the Aging, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Healthcare Consortium and the Columbia County DOH.

The research of our coalition members, confirmed by the NYSDOH website, has determined that these towns have some of the highest radon levels in Columbia County:

We’d like to assist income eligible, elderly and minority homeowners in these four areas with FREE radon testing kits…all we ask is that participants in the program share their radon test results with us to help our program gauge the impact of radon in the community.
