Columbia County Department of Health Public Health Priorities
(Based on the 1999-2004 Community Health Assessment)

Decrease the number of individuals suffering from cardiovascular disease by increasing the number of persons who engage in regular physical activity for at least 30 minutes per day.

Reduce the numbers of alcohol related motor vehicle injuries and deaths.

Reduce Lyme disease through increased public awareness and increased early diagnosis by providers.

Reduce the number of deaths due to falls.

Alert the community to the threat of West Nile Virus on their health status and seek support & participation in preventive interventions.

Increase the number of children who receive regular dental care services such as screening, cleaning and the application of a sealant.

Increase public health awareness regarding rabies and reduce the number of persons who place themselves at risk for exposure.

The above outlined public health priorities were identified after completing the 1999-2004 Community Health Assessment (CHA). The CHA is the ongoing process of regular and systematic collection, assembly, analysis, and distribution of information on the health needs of the community. This information includes statistics on health status, community health needs/gaps/problems and assets. The sharing of findings with key stakeholders enables and mobilizes community members to work collaboratively towards building a healthier community.
