THE COLUMBIA COUNTY HEALTHY HEART PROGRAM
Jane Diamond, Project Coordinator
Liz Bradford, Project Assistant
The
Columbia County Healthy Heart Grant is dedicated to work
in the schools of Columbia County to promote healthier food
alternatives and a more active physical environment through
change in school policy and practices.
We are hard at work in all of the Columbia County school districts
(Hudson, Taconic Hills, Chatham, New Lebanon, Germantown
and Ichabod Crane).
In meetings with teachers, administrators, students and parents
we utilize the School Health Index (http://apps.nccd.cdc.gov/shi/),
developed by the Centers for Disease Control, as a school
self-assessment and planning guide to:
1.
Identify the strengths and weakness of your school’s
health promotion, policies and programs.
2. Develop an action plan for improving student health
3. Involve teachers, parent, students and the community in improving school
policies, programs and services.
Our past and current projects include:
Distribution of pedometers for school walking clubs
Construction of a greenhouse at Taconic Hills School
A handicapped accessible raised- bed garden and greenhouse in the Ichabod Crane
Central School District, funded by a grant from the NYS Disability and Health
Program
Providing educators to train phys-ed teachers in Adaptive PE
Purchase of salad bars for cafeterias
Working to provide healthy snack vending machines
Implementation of “Smart Food” curriculum, a nutrition-centered
mentoring program between third and fifth grade students
A mini-grant program for participating school districts- Grant
Application
Assisting schools in grant writing to obtain health and nutrition- based grants
In addition to our online e-news we also publish
a print newsletter, The Healthy Heart News,
keeping the public informed on our progress in schools and
providing the latest nutrition and health information.
